Meet Katie...

Hi, I'm Katie Humphrey, and I am a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).  I also have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Stetson University.  My passion is health and fitness, and it is the reason I helped start The Organic Affair with my mother.  I have created this page to expel myths and clear up misunderstandings many individuals have with fitness.  I will be frequently posting training and nutritional tips for everyone!

I will also be posting FAQ's from clients and friends in hopes to answer typical questions. If you have any additional questions, please email me at CoachKHumphrey@gmail.com. Thanks for reading and enjoy!

Fitness Tips

Goal Set: in my opinion, setting goals is the first and most important step in getting fit.

  • Take the time to write down short term and long term health goals.
  • Identify your "WHY"...Why do you want to do it?  Discovering why you want to do something will empower you even more to accomplish it.  It will also be the driving force when you want to give up.
  • For short term goals: write down the health goals you would like to achieve within the next 3, 6, and 9 months; for long term goals (these are just as important as short term), jot down goals you want to meet within 1-3 years, and even 5 years down the road (it's not as far off as you think).
  • Be specific - make sure you write down everything you want to achieve (ie. get off a specific medication, improve blood test results, tone the body, bench press a certain weight amount, fit into clothes, etc.)
  • Write down thoughts and feelings associated with achieving these goals (ie. "I will feel so amazing if I can fit into some of my old clothes", "I can do anything if I'm strong enough to bench press 300 lbs.!")

Nutritional Tips

Be an informed consumer: Stop getting your nutritional advice from the media, your neighbor, PEOPLE magazine, etc., and learn the facts for yourself!

  • Learning the ABC's of eating right will cut through the mud and steer you in the right direction of eating the proper foods for health and weight loss.  For you to achieve your health goals (ie. looking great in a swimsuit, lowering your cholesterol), you must know what is in the stuff you're putting in your body (even if it's fruits and veggies).
  • Find credible sources to learn your facts.  I personally recommend The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno; her simple and straightforward style makes it fun and easy to learn how to eat properly. She is also releasing a For Men addition.
  • Read the facts!  Learn to read nutrition labels on everything.  If the food you're buying contains a ton of ingredients, especially ones you can't pronounce, chuck it.  If sugar or some type of sweetener is the 2nd or 3rd ingredient, chuck it even farther.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I go about exercising if I'm out of shape? Start by walking every other day. Set a time or distance goal (ie. I'm walking for 20 minutes a day, 4 times a week, for two weeks, then I'll increase it to 30 minutes a day when it gets too easy; I'll walk a mile for two weeks, and increase it by a quarter of a mile every week thereafter).  Resistance bands are also effective for anyone who is not accustomed to weight training.  Renting exercise DVD's is also a great way for beginners to get into the habit of exercising.  It offers the benefit and comfort of working out in your home and provides a personal coach to get you in shape!

Why do I have to weight train to lose weight? Won't I get bulky? Isn't cardio enough? Weight training is necessary for anyone who wants to change his or her body composition. Cardiovascular exercise is very important for weight loss, but it's not enough if you're looking to tone or change the shape of your body.  Also, women need not be afraid of getting bulky; unless you're pumping steriods, you won't find yourself plagued with Arnold Schwartzenegger guns.
